Yonas Seyoum is a visual artist from Belgium. His work ranges from video to installations. Synthetic imagery and its deconstruction are at the heart of his artistic practice. Most of his work stems from the desire to capture the forever unattainable and to crystallize the ephemeral. In pursuit of that seeming impossibility, he mostly uses digital media. He is captivated by the melancholic poetry and illusionary nature of computer simulations. They flirt with the idea of immortality. Computer simulations can seemingly embalm moments, objects, places and people. In some of the more recent Hollywood movies, actors are brought back from the dead with the help of computer-generated clones. Although these digital doubles look hyperrealistic, they can’t hide that they are imposters. In a way they bear a stronger resemblance to Frankenstein’s monster or a ghost than to the late actors. Ironically, instead of bringing the actors back to life, the doubles emphasize their absence. Seyoum sees this contradiction as an essential characteristic of computer simulations. He is fascinated by their ability to evoke a presence that simultaneously reveals its absence. In his work he often explores the tension between the two. He likes to seduce the viewer with illusions that reveal themselves, comparable to hypnotizing advertising photos that are known to have been photoshopped. They leave behind a hunger for something that can never be.
